The world of boxing has never been in better shape. Young new fighters are emerging, and they are strong, fast and determined to make a name for themselves in the global village of fisticuffs. One particular athlete is Demetrius “Boo-Boo” Andrade (15-0, 10KO’s), 23 years young from Providence, RI. This fighter has his sights set on superstardom. Andrade has it all; he’s an amazing blend of superb size, skill and speed, a former Olympian and southpaw who can fight inside or out. And at his weight class, there should be plenty of great fights in the very near future. You see, Andrade is a Lt. Middleweight (154 lbs). That weight class sits between Welterweight (147lbs) and Middleweight (160lbs), considered by many to have the most exciting and skilled fighters on the planet. Andrade has a cornucopia of options in the next 36 months. Let’s get to some:
1. Erislandy Lara (15-1-1, 10KO’s)
Lara is a tough, exceptionally skilled, amateur decorated fighter from Cuba. He has all the makings of a champion, and a fight with Andrade would launch both of their names directly into the limelight. Lara, like Andrade, is a southpaw who usually starts off on the outside, then uses his footwork and straight left hand to get in close. Lara is one of the most feared fighters at 154 lbs.
2. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (39-0-1, 29KO’s)
Alvarez is the most popular athlete in Mexico. That should tell you a lot about the magnitude of each fight he participates in. The pride of Juanacatian, Jalisco; Alvarez with his cinnamon colored hair and freckles is a unique sight, and a great boxer. “Canelo” a big, rugged, pounding boxer-puncher has recently stepped up to fight some of the top contenders at 154 lbs. Alvarez is smart, disciplined and maybe most importantly for Andrade: “Canelo” is a megastar in his country, so he brings a lot of money and interest.
3. James Kirkland (30-1, 27KO’s)
Anyone who knows boxing will tell you these three words about Kirkland: He’s a beast! Kirkland has had an interesting career. At onetime considered the biggest puncher at 154lbs, he found himself up against the law on gun charges. After his stint in jail, Kirkland returned, but without beloved trainer Ann Wolfe. It cost Kirkland dearly against Nobuhiro Ishida, as Kirkland was crushed in the first round by knockout. Since reuniting with Wolfe, Kirkland has won three straight fights, including a fight (brawl) of the year candidate against Alfredo Angulo. If Andrade were to fight Kirkland, it would be sooner rather than later.
Some other options for Andrade include: Cory Spinks (39-6, 11KO’s), Paul Williams (40-2, 27KO’s), Cornelius Bundrage (31-4, 18KO’s) Austin Trout (24-0, 14KO’s) and Vanes Martirosyan (31-0 19KO’s).
Andrade has the potential to become a household name not just in boxing, but in the entire sports world. As he continues his path, his legacy will depend on the work that’s right in front of him. Demetrius Andrade: Your time is now.
