BATTLE OF THE BADGES 5, 2013

Battle of the Badges 5; was a pleasant pleasure of pugilistic passion. I saw some men persevere and win and I witnessed others quit and lose. Iseen a woman go down but had the heart to get up.  New York law enforcement officers matched against Mass Corrections Officers, a nice 12 bout card held at the Fox Theatre in Foxwoods Resort Casino. Beautiful evening of boxing it was.

BOUT #1  Erik Cabral vs Larry Wojtach 178 lbs

“Two-three Erik” screamed the Cappeillo backed corner of the thickly muscled Mr Cabral. As the fight begins both men appear to be  a little frigidy, closing eyes while punching and slapping shots. In the second round Erik looks a little more comfortable but still not sure what to do when punches are coming at him. Erik hurts Larry with a big right hand ten seconds before the round ends. I see Larry Wojtach winning this first bout for the New York Law Enforcement

BOUT #2 Dean Howdy (MA CO) VS Lawrence Still (NY) 178

First round action Dean is the aggressor and stays close to work Lawrence body with hooks. Lawrence ties him up but cannot get enough space to punch and is being smothered for most of the round. Second round Lawrence shows he can protect himself while his back  is against the ropes and he is also able to fight moving backwards. Dean  outworks his opponent but is squared up a bit so is caught in between the guard.Round 3 Dean is showing some fatigue but still working. Lawrence is still smothered and cannot get much work in. Lawrence Still wins

After second bout the announcer welcomes to the ring heavyweight GERRY COONY and middleweight VITO ANTUOFERMO who hand out ribbons to the contestants.

BOUT  #3 Matt Geurin (MA LAW) VS Robert Vansyckle (NY LAW) 201 lbs

First round  both guys are bouncy  kind of wild. Matt hurts Rob the with a left hook then a right hand drops him one moment after. Vansyckle looking discouraged on the canvas doesnt seem terribly hurt but decides to quit anyways. 46 seconds into the first round winner Matt Guerin scores a TKO victory.

After third bout Tony DeMarco, former welter weight champion is announced and welcomed into the ring.

Bout #4 Rian Torrance (Ma Co) vs David Salinas (CT)

First round both guys are in a good stance and have a platform to work from. After a minute of boxing Salinas switches to southpaw. Rian ends the round working Salinass on the ropes. Second round starts off with posing from each  guy. Salinas lands right hand to body. Rian has Salinas pinned to ropes again, smothering him but not really landing anything clean. Round three Rian is still the aggressor and gets the victory.

After bout 4 the last man to beat Mike Tyson…Irish Heavyweight Kevin Mcbride is announced into the ring.

BOUT 5  Tim Gallagher (MA CO) VS Joe Diaz (CT) 201 LBS

ROUND ONE Southpaw Diaz uses lateral movement  with decent combos. Tim has good defense and is not overwhelmed by the busier Diaz. Round 2 Tim comes out  with more spark and more punches although both men are fatigued by middle of round. Final moments before bell finish with laying and wrestling. Round 3 Diaz holds whenever Tim tries to get his work in. Diaz tires and  barely does any work in the last round. Although skilled to a degree, conditioning cost him this one. Tim Gallagher wins

After bout 5 Tony Petronelli is announced and welcomed into the ring.

BOUT 6 Michael Campbell (MA CO) VS Paul Melocowsky (SWEET SCIENCE BOXING)

ROUND ONE both guys are shaky legged but landing punches on one another. Paul’s mouth is open while he is punching. A very busy back and forth round. Round two Campbell connects with a right hand left hook combo..Paul is bleeding from nose. Michael gets off on him again and Paul is given an 8 count. Soon after action resumes Paul gets hit with a big right hand and ref steps in to wave off contest. Campbell wins.

After bout 6. 2004 olympian Jason Estrada is announced and welcomed into the ring

BOUT 7 Ashley Moore (MA CO) VS Danielle Bruard (NY LAW)125 lbs

First round Ashley appears to be more skilled and scores a clean right hand. Danielle is clearly  affected by the punch and the ref steps in to give 8 count. Right after action resumes Ashley hops on Danielle with more work and Danielle is turning her face away from the fight looking to take flight. Not long before the ref steps in to halt the contest.  First round TKO for Ashley Moore.

BOUT 8 Jay Matthews-Dixon (Bridgeport Pd) vs Dennis Mahoney (NY LAW)

ROUND ONE  starts wild and Dennis hits canvas from a hard charge. I hear the ref tell Jay “This isn’t football here!”  Two seconds after Dennis is dropped again this time by a punch. Dennis recovers but Jay jumps on him again and Dennis is given the 8 count. While the ref is counting Dennis’ corner throws in towel to end the match. Jay Matthews-Dixon wins 1st round TKO.

BOUT 9  Paul Finlay VS Alex Mylet

Paul Finlay finishes his work quickly, dropping Mylet  twice before getting the stoppage at 1:34 in the first round

BOUT 10 Graham Trout (MA LAW) VS Terrance Lyons

This scrap turns out to be a gem.  Both guys landing clean shots and they both can take a shot. After some great back and forth action im predicting this will be fight of the night- that is- if both guys dont run out of gas and get sloppy. Round two, Graham repeatedly leans back and catches his opponent with a long left hook when reaching in. Graham times an over hand right  twice in a row. Third round Graham is still scoring with left hook, winning the match.

After fight 10 Ice Man John Scully is announced and invited into the ring.

BOUT 11 Shane Vale (MA CO) VS Will Faller (NY LAW)

In the first Shane comes out as a southpaw against a man a half foot taller than him but shows composure.  Right hooks back up Will Faller but Will remains the busier man throughout the first round. Second round, Shane has him hurt again with a straight left but doesnt go in to capitalize after. Will is landing more smaller punchers in larger volumes and is still the busier puncher. Third round Shane and Will mix it up and at end of round Shane lands two big shots. A tactful match Shane landing the heavier shots but Will outworked him was busier and got the win. Will Faller victorious.

BOUT 12 Roland Estrada Jr. (East Providence PD) VS Jason Perna (NY LAW)

ROUND 1 Roland Estrada Jr. lands 2 big right hands. Perna does not want to deal with it so he pushes his gloves under the throat of Estrada Jr to freeze him on the ropes. He repeats this illegal move and is disqualified at 1:40 of the first round. Estrada hurt Perna with the two punches he connected with in the short time, this would have been a good fight  to see finish out. Maybe we can see them rematch at the 401 REGIMEN CLASSIC in Providence, R.I. June 29th, 2013.

Unknown Trout vs Superstar Canelo

alvarez-trout-4_3_r536_c534

This fight is simply a battle of two extremes, the unknown road warrior Trout vs the legendary superstar Alvarez. Perhaps Alvarez being the younger undefeated, more popular Mexican warrior who is considered demigod in his homeland should be favored, but I  believe Alvarez is simply untested. He is an  athletically gifted, interesting looking, and highly marketable…
